75 Years

On September 20th and 27th 2015 our Zion Lutheran congregation and friends celebrated our 75th anniversary.  On this page we share that wonderful time with all.

Three Zion Pastors!

Former pastors of Zion Lutheran Church Jocelyn Johnston and John Pearce traveled to join us.  Here they are getting ready for the service with Pastor Bill McGowan.

What fun to sing some of our favorite hymns with Earl Hemmer, Doug and Judy Simpson, and Pastor Bill!

Pastor Bill and Joan McGowan and Rick Reynolds presented Ziggy Dunphey and Janie Preiser with gifts from Zion for all their work in planning such a fantastic luncheon celebration at Ocean Acres Country Club.

NJ ELCA Bishop Tracey Bartholomew participated in the anniversary celebration and delivered the sermon on September 27th.  The service was followed by a delicious luncheon and get-together prepared by our Ladies Guild in the Fellowship Hall.

Rabbi Michael Jay of JCC of LBI and his wife joined us, too!  At the September 20th luncheon at Ocean Acres Country Club Rabbi Jay presented Zion with the gift of a SHOFAR, a horn that, among other things, is used in Jewish tradition to announce holidays.  Thank you, Rabbi Jay!

Walk Down Memory Lane
Walk Down Memory Lane

Walk Down Memory Lane with Edith Dalland Parker and Anna Lisa Olsen Ray in the special movie presentation on this page.  Edith and Anna Lisa were children in Barnegat Light in 1940 when our church was established primarily by Norwegian immigrant fishermen and their families.  Edith and Anna Lisa's parents were instrumental in our early church and they were two of the three who were first to be confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church!  Hear them tell you all about it in the movie at left.  Thank you, Edith and Anna Lisa for your amazing contribution to our celebration.

Anniversary Cookbook
Anniversary Cookbook

Our cookbook team of Astrid Ottey, Linda Haviland and Rosemarie Unger are "still cooking"and smiling because their long winter of hard work gathering recipes has produced our fantastic new cookbook in honor of our Zion 75th Anniversary.  Thanks, Ladies, for a great project so well done!  Their shirts say, "75 and Still Cooking!".  Contact the church office to get your own copy of the cookbook.

75 Years at the Organ for Eleanor Crane

Eleanor Crane has served the Lutheran churches of LBI for 75 years as an organist, and she retired on her 92nd birthday by playing the July 19th service at Zion Lutheran Church.  A birthday party was held for her after the service in the Fellowship Hall.  Click above to see the service and pictures of all the excitement on that day.  In addition here's the promised link to the Channel 6 News spot all about Eleanor and the Zion Lutheran Church.
